First Nations People Mailers

ARTWORK STORY - WALA CONNECTIONS
To Aboriginal peoples across our continent, wala (Yorta Yorta word for water) is life. On such a dry country, fresh wala is vital. This piece represents the important history our waterways share with us. It reflects our intergenerational knowledge and families cultural exchange.
The way of life for Aboriginal peoples was centred around ensuring the use of all resources was sustainable, and wala is a significant part of that balance. Wala connects and interconnects with the land, with the plants, animals and the air we breathe. To keep our country healthy and safe, Aboriginal peoples ensure that all elements are protected.
Wala shares messages and memories. There are sacred sites throughout our rivers and other waterways. The calmness of our wala for me now holds me grounded and content, it helps me to be present yet reminisce. It reminds me that my ancestors are here and are guiding me.
ARTIST STORY

Madison Conners is a proud Yorta Yorta (Wolithica clan), Dja Dja Wurrung (Moomnom Gunditj Bee clan) and Gamilaroi woman. She was born and grew on her Kannygoopna (Shepparton) meaning the place in the river where big fish are caught. Madison is an artist, a human rights advocate, and a mother of two. Her business, Yarli Creative, is a coming together of her yarka (children), her yakapna (family) and her mulana (spirit).

“My identity is what drives me. It’s something that is within me and comes from the heart. My connection to my environmental surroundings is my blood line and vein to this country and the community which runs deep within. I come from a strong line of women and am following in their footsteps; I aim to embody their full form on this earth and strive to make my mob proud of the work that I create and achieve.”

They work with children, families and communities that face the greatest exclusion and live with injustice and disadvantage every single day.

Their vision is for First Nations people in Australia to achieve their aspirations for their children to enjoy a life of opportunity, strong cultural identity, and personal wellbeing by having voice and agency over their social, cultural, political and economic future.

They do this in 3 main ways:

1. Community Change

2. Systems Change

3. Society Change

You can read about their amazing work here.

Hero Packaging acknowledges the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community.
